I have Mac OS X High Sierra 10.13.2 and Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client 4.5.02036 does not work. It installs but every time I need to establish a VPN it fails at 'activating vpn adapter'. After a while it says the connection is unsuccessful. Any insight would be much appreciated. Setting up the Cisco VPN client. Download the Cicso VPN client for macOS from our Self Registration page. Launch the downloaded installer file and click through the screens to complete the installation. Go to your Applications folder and open the Cisco folder. Double-click on the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client.

To connect to Cisco AnyConnect follow the instructions in Connect to AnyConnect VPN for Mac OS X. Installing Cisco AnyConnect for macOS. Click on the Download button under the AnyConnect for macOS (Recommended) section on the Downloads & Guides page. Enter your Internet ID and password, if prompted. Save the application, Do Not Run from the web.
NOTE: If you have an FBRI-provided Mac, the Cisco Anyconnect Client is already installed. Please skip to Starting the VPN Client below.
Installing the VPN Client
- Download the AnyConnect VPN client for Mac OS X:
- In your Downloads folder, double-click the file you just downloaded to open it. An icon will appear on the desktop called AnyConnect, and a separate window will open.
- Double-click on AnyConnect.mpkg to run the installer, then follow the steps to complete the installation.
- When you see this screen, UN-check everything with the exception of VPN: (VPN option grayed out? Go here.)
- Starting with macOS 10.13 High Sierra: During the installation, you will be prompted to enable the AnyConnect software extension in the System Preferences -> Security & Privacy pane. The requirement to manually enable the software extension is an operating system requirement.
Starting the VPN Client
NOTE:The VPN will not connect if you are connected to the FBRI wired or wireless network.
- In your Applications folder, go to the Cisco folder and double-click the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client.
- Enter vpn.vtc.vt.edu in the Ready toConnect to field, then press the Connect button.
- Enter your FBRI username and password, then click OK.
- A banner window will appear. Click Accept to close that window. You are now connected!
Disconnecting the VPN Client
When you are finished using the VPN, remember to disconnect (failing to disconnect can result in being unable to access resources if you are on-site at the Research Institute).
- Click the AnyConnect client icon located in the menu bar near the top right corner of your screen.
- Select Quit.

You must have an active AnyConnect Plus, Apex or VPN Only term/contract to utilize this software. Use is no longer permitted for older Essentials/Premium with Mobile licensing. AnyConnect may never be used with non-Cisco headends.
Trial AnyConnect Apex (ASA) licenses are available for administrators at www.cisco.com/go/license
AnyConnect for iOS requires Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance (ASA) Boot image 8.0(4) or later.
Per App VPN requires ASA 9.3(2) or later (5500-X/ASAv only) with Plus, Apex or VPN Only licensing and a minimum Apple iOS version of 8.3. In the current release, the Per App functions are not eligible for Cisco TAC support. Please send questions/report issues to [email protected]
