When we published a post that directed users on how to change their folder icons to awesome images, we felt little guilty in keeping Mac users out of this awesome trick. Although a bit late, but here we are with the trick to change icon of any file or folder in OS X.

• Here's how to customize your Mac's icons, for free, in just a couple simple steps. Customizing your desktop icons isn't strictly a time waster. Take, for example, your most-used folders.
• To change this, right click on the folder, and change it from Stack to Folder. It should be noted that not all dock icons can be changed in this manner. The icons that ship with the Mac OS, such as iTunes, Mail, etc., are set so that you can’t simply copy and paste it away.

Source 1: Your own picture or a picture from the web | Change folder icon

Steps

• Open the picture in Preview > choose Edit > Select All > again select Edit > Copy
• Go to the file or folder whose icon you want to replace. Select File > Get Info (alternatively you can right click on the file or folder and select ‘Get Info’)

• At the top of the Info window > click of the picture of the icon > choose Edit > Paste

Source 2: Icon from another folder or file | Change folder icon

Steps

1. Select the file or folder that has the source image > choose File > Get Info > Select the icon at the top of the Info Window > Choose Edit > Copy
2. Select the file or folder whose icon you wish to customize > choose File > Get Info > Select the icon at the top of the Info Window > Choose Edit > Paste
